Archetype

What is Kuudere?

Kuudere is a character archetype in anime and hentai describing someone who is cool, calm, and emotionally detached on the surface but harbors deep feelings underneath. The term combines 'kuuru' (cool, from the English 'cool') and 'deredere' (lovey-dovey). Kuudere characters speak in flat, measured tones, rarely show visible emotion, and approach everything — including romance and intimacy — with apparent indifference. This makes the rare moments when their true feelings surface dramatically impactful. In the hentai context, kuudere characters are compelling precisely because of the contrast: watching a normally stone-faced character lose composure is its own specific fantasy category. Famous kuudere archetypes from mainstream anime include Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion and Yuki Nagato from Haruhi Suzumiya — both have massive hentai fanbases. Kuudere differs from tsundere (who is actively hostile) and yandere (who is dangerously obsessive) in that the kuudere character is simply... absent in their emotional expression rather than extreme in either direction. On iku.gg, kuudere and emotionless_girl tags appear in content where this specific character dynamic drives the scenario.
