What is Mosaic Censorship?

Mosaic censorship is the pixelation technique applied to genitalia in Japanese adult content — both live-action and animated hentai — required by Article 175 of the Japanese Penal Code. The law, which dates to 1907, criminalizes the distribution of 'obscene materials' and in practice has been interpreted by Japanese courts to require pixelation. The result is the distinctive mosaic blur visible on virtually all domestically produced Japanese hentai. The mosaic style has itself become culturally recognized as a marker of authentic Japanese hentai production — international fans immediately identify it. In the hentai community, the search for uncensored content is constant: international releases, Western-produced hentai, and fan-decensored versions all avoid the mosaic. The censored vs uncensored debate is one of the most active in hentai communities. Censorship standards also vary — some studios apply minimal light mosaics while others apply heavy blurs, and some older content uses black bars instead of pixels. On iku.gg, the censored and uncensored tags allow filtering by preference. The mosaic is so associated with hentai that its absence is itself a positive selling point, reflected in how consistently 'uncensored' appears as a top search modifier.
